The Aircraft Painter coats surfaces of aircraft with paint, lacquer, epoxy, resin or other material, using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other devices, removes old paint from aircraft, using liquid paint remover and scraper. The painter may smooth aircraft surfaces with sandpaper and steel wool as well as roughen aluminum surfaces with acid solution and steel wool to insure that paint adheres to surface. The candidate may also mask and cover portions of surfaces not to be painted and paint insignia, letters or numerals on aircraft surface, using stencils.

  • Must be able to read and interpret technical orders, blueprints, engineering orders, manufacturer procedures and planning documents to paint/de-paint/corrosion control process, mixing instructions/formulas, hazardous waste disposal instructions and other job related information.
  • Able to setup, operate, and clean paint/de-paint and corrosion control equipment and tools.
  • Able to prepare, mix, and apply gloss paints, lacquers, and sealers to aircraft parts and assemblies.
  • Able to perform assigned duties while wearing required safety equipment.

Should have a basic knowledge of elementary mathematics, basic skills and techniques in the use of abrasives, chemical stripping processes, paint and de-paint operations, corrosive identification and correction methodologies, and shop practices. Work from information such as drawings, specifications, sketches, work orders, templates, cursory knowledge of company and government regulations covering corrosion control, quality, time and material usage and the use and disposal of hazardous materials.

PDS Tech is seeking an Aircraft Painter II for an open position in Savannah, GA.

The Aircraft Painter II works under minimum supervision to safely prepare, paint and detail aircraft according to schedule using company quality standards and operating procedures.

Essential Functions:
  • Safely perform aircraft preparation, painting, and detailing of aircraft under minimal supervision. Coordinate with supervision and Inspection to ensure compliance with internal and FAA paperwork, sign-offs and quality specifications.
  • Follow standard operating procedures when using tools and equipment such as dual action sanders, hydraulic lift platforms and paint sprayers. Properly care for and maintain shop equipment and tools.
  • Follow standard operating procedures when using sealants, paint strippers and corrosion-preventive chemicals and use protective equipment as required.
  • Comply with safety rules and procedures and be alert for unsafe conditions. Address unsafe conditions before putting people or property at risk.
  • Use the material tracking system to create parts demand, track squawks and to sign-off work.
  • Assist with aircraft movement in hangars.
  • Offer continuous improvement ideas/participate in continuous improvement activities.







  • Education and Experience Requirements:

    High school diploma/GED. Valid Drivers License required. Two (2) years experience in related paint processes. Aircraft industry experience preferred. A working knowledge of paint processes and products (lacquers, enamels, epoxies, urethanes, and acrylics) is necessary.


    Other Requirements:
    • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
    • Able to use tools and equipment associated with the aircraft painting process.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering documentation.
    • Able to pass Pulmonary Function Test to obtain respirator certification.
    • Able to climb ladders and stairs, work in small restricted areas, lift up to 40 pounds and work any shift.
    • Must be computer literate.

    • Fabricates, plans, lays out and modifies complex critical configurations to the coatings on composite assemblies

    • Prepares the aircraft, panel, and part surfaces prior to coatings using mechanical stripping.  
    • Read, interpret and follow government provided technical data, blueprints, engineering drawings, standard operating procedures, and manufacturing specifications in the coatings strip process
    • Remove various existing aircraft paint/coating by various mechanical and manual methods:  sanding; scrapping with non-metallic tools; de-greasers; solvents; sandpaper, etc.
    • Perform gap filler removal, sanding and feather sanding of exterior surfaces of aircraft, panels, skins, and components in prepping for coatings applications
    • Perform inspection of aircraft access panels, openings, and components for any media intrusion after performance of manual stripping.  The Contractor shall perform removal of any media required
    • Inspect aircraft and components for any damage or defects after coatings removal and document such damage or defects on the maintenance work request worksheet

    Purpose of the Job
    Prepares, paints, and finishes coating to aircraft, parts, and assemblies. Lay out paint schemes and designs. Performs specialized paint assignments. Identify nonconforming detail parts, assemblies and processes. Work with engineering to improve manufacturing processes.

    Major Tasks and Responsibilities
    • Apply primer and finish coats, including stripping and other detail work.
    • Touch up primer and finish coats, including color matching and blending. Lay out paint schemes and design templates.
    • Apply markings to parts and aircraft using several methods including silk screens and maskant aids.
    • Designs templates.
    • Work from detailed blueprints, fabrication, assembly outlines, sketches, patterns, and written or verbal instructions to plan material requirements, the sequence of operations and fabricate to predetermined configurations.
    • Set up and operate such typical shop equipment as paint mixers, steam cleaner power washers, Positector or other paint measuring equipment, stencil maker, ID printers, and other general shop equipment and tools to complete work assignments.
    • Estimates labor and material costs of aircraft painting according to customer specifications.
    • Develops application plans and methods.
    • Provide guidance and training to new or lesser skilled paint operation personnel.
    • Performs work in both FOD critical and FOD sensitive environments, ensures all assemblies and detail parts are free of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and non-conformances issues.
    • Check units for compliance using hand held precision measuring equipment, such as wet gauges and scales.
    • Report all non-conformances to manufacturing supervision or corrective action representative.
    • Prepare rejection tags noting deviations from specifications on dimensions, finishes, material, processes, or quality when required.
    • Follow all safety procedures and reports unsafe conditions to safety officials or manufacturing supervision.
    • Reports job status and restraints to coworkers and supervision.
    • Identifies production inefficiencies and suggests potential improvements to product or process.
    Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
    • Knowledgeable and skilled in painting processes and techniques and common shop practices.
    • Knowledgeable and able to interpret blueprints, sketches and written and verbal instructions.
    • Knowledgeable and able to apply shop math.
    • Knowledgeable and able to use computer systems for office and shop applications.
    • Skilled in listening and interpersonal participation, and able to work with others as part of a team which includes giving and receiving feedback, and assisting others in completion of tasks.
    • Able to meet the physical requirements to be certified by Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) to use a respirator.
    • Able to complete and maintain all required training and certifications needed to do your job efficiently.
